Receiving a cancer diagnosis turns your world upside down. The whirlwind of appointments, treatments and emotions can be overwhelming, leaving you feeling adrift in a sea of medical necessity.

In this chaos, it’s easy to put yourself last. But here’s the truth: self-care during cancer treatment isn't a luxury; it's a vital part of your healing journey. By taking care of your physical, emotional and mental health you are better equipped to face the challenges ahead.

Here are a few ideas for self care:

1. Listen to your body. If you are tired, rest. This is a vital part of healing your body.

2. Feed your body with nourishing food including a balance of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Please do consult your medical team with regards to specific dietary requirements. There are plenty of great recipes online for healthy treats too, my favourite is a cheats Snickers with dates, peanut butter and dark chocolate.

3. Stay hydrated.

4. Go out for a short walk each day. Even if to the end of the road and back. The fresh air will do you the world of good.

5. Establish a sleep routine, create a calming bedtime ritual. Try massaging your body with your favourite cream or skin oil. I found Spacemasks really helped too.

6. Try mindfulness and meditation. Practise deep breathing. Again, there are plenty of techniques online.

7. Maybe start up a journal, writing down your thoughts and worries might help you to manage them.

8. Meet up with friends for a coffee or a short walk, don’t feel like you need to go through this alone, or ask them to your home, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

9. Take up a gentle hobby. Sewing, knitting, doing a puzzle, planting flowers all helped me to stay sane.

I hope some of these ideas help. Don’t feel pressurised to do each and every one every day, just fit in what you can. You will soon discover what works best for you.
